No Half Steppin’

Heatwave is an international funk/disco band formed in 1975 and in 1976 the song “Ain’t No Half Steppin'”reached number sixteen on the R&B charts. A few of the lyrics went like this “I’ve got my eyes on you (no half steppin’) Watching what you do (no half steppin’) Don’t think that you can’t jive (no half steppin’)Cause I’ll be checking all the time (no half steppin’)”.

Revelation 3:15-17 says “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!  So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.  You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked” .Unfortunately, fully embracing one’s faith these days is viewed as fanatical. Sure it’s okay to be Christian, as long as you don’t fully believe it and live it out. We say it is only reasonable to treat your faith as moderately important. However, if you fully believe it…well, now you are acting unreasonable. It is reasonable to make religion a part of your life.  But don’t go making it the most important part!  That is just crazy! You will quickly be labeled as an extremist.

Slowly we have gotten comfortable living our faith halfway.  We have one foot in with God and one foot out in the world.  We are ready to hop in or out depending on which best suits our present situation.  Moreover, many of us do it without even realizing it because we have grown up not knowing any other way. Matthew 6:24 says, “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other”.

More and more in today’s world, relativism, which is the bedfellow of the secular, has become the temptress of the sacred. In the world of the secular, people are taught to avoid passing judgment, whether it be about other peoples’ beliefs, or lifestyle preferences, sexual orientation, moral judgments, faithfulness, and personal ethics.  The secularists want tolerance shown to their ungodly lifestyles.  Therefore, they consider sin to be an anachronistic and meaningless concept. Having one foot in the world is a dangerous lie, it is not freedom at all, in fact, it is total imprisonment.

The lines are blurred regarding what is right, and what is wrong. “If I hang out with the wrong people, and listen to dirty jokes at lunch, and I sit and partake in all the office gossip, and go to all kinds of raunchy movies, and I go to parties where there is drinking and all kinds of sexual stuff,” it’s okay because I only participate occasionally, besides these are my friends”. Newsflash we can catch ungodliness by hanging out with the wrong people consistently, just like you can catch a cold by simply being around the sick.

A half stepping Christian is when we say that we believe in God and His teachings, but then we do not live our lives in such a way that proves our beliefs. “Believers are called to sanctify themselves, forsake sin, and live a holy manner of life. So choose today whom you will serve. Look to God and his will for every good gift in your life. Make your heart match your actions and vice versa. Say with the psalmist, “The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup” – Psalm 16:5.

God’s Peace!
